Our projects

We’re transforming the UK’s railway. The size and scale of our projects are enormous and we’re investing over £4b in enhancing the rail network each year. From reducing journey times between major cities to opening up new routes for passengers and freight, our Project Managers deliver some of the biggest projects in the UK. Here you can discover just a few of the exciting projects that lie ahead.

The Thameslink Programme is a £5.5bn project that will enhance the rail network to, and through, London. It will deliver a host of benefits to millions of people, the environment and the economy. Passengers will see the full benefits by the end of 2015, but the scheme has been carefully designed to deliver enhanced services in time for London 2012. By the end of 2011, longer 12 car trains (50% extra capacity) will run on the route between Bedford, Central London and Brighton for the first time.

By 2015 there will be a 200% increase in the number of trains running through the heart of London, and Blackfriars will become the first station to span the Thames with a new entrance on the South Bank serving a host of business, residential and tourist areas including the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe.

Crossrail is a pioneering project set to revolutionise transport in the capital. Linking Maidenhead to the west of London and Shenfield in Essex, it will connect commuters to the City, Canary Wharf, the West End and Heathrow Airport, using mainline trains and a 21km tunnel under the centre of the City. Construction will begin in 2010, and when it does, it will be the largest civil engineering project in Europe.

It’s a hugely ambitious venture. With 24 trains per hour during peak times, an estimated 160,000 passengers will be carried in the morning rush hour. It will transform the lives of millions of people in and around London and make a lasting improvement to the UK’s transport infrastructure.

Our challenge is immense. We’re responsible for the design, development and delivery of work outside the tunnel area. Much of the work will take place on active lines and stations, and we’ll complete it with minimal disruption to passengers and freight companies.

Our ambitious plans will see us completely redevelop the existing station, creating a landmark the city can be proud of. The work will transform the station environment, introducing superb new facilities, a new public square and improving accessibility. And as Britain’s second city continues to develop, we’ll see that the rail network is in step with the pace of change by delivering an essential boost to capacity. The scheme has already won local and governmental support and we’re now working with local partners to help realise our vision for Birmingham’s infrastructure.
